Two UPDF members arrested in Babuchara

Army arrested two members of the United Peoples’ Democratic Front, popularly known by its acronym UPDF, from a house in Babuchara under Dighinala Upazila in Khagrachai district in the small hours of today.

Sources said a group of army personnel led by 2-IC Major Enam and Major Hemayet from Dighinala zone raided the house of Jotirmoy Chakma (65) at Nuabazar at 4am and picked up the UPDF members -- Rupam Chakma alias Pabitra, 30, son of Mukta Lal Chakma of village Rangapani, Rangamati and Miko Chakma, 27, son of Bindu Lal Chakma of village Amtoli Headman Para.

They were handed over to the police at about 8:30am.

When Suresh Kanti Chakma, a member of Babuchara Union Council, contacted Major Enam and requested him to release the UPDF members, he (Enam) reported to have said, “This is a matter not related to us. The police will decide it.”

Our correspondent from Dighinala adds: The army was taking the UPDF members back to its custody at 12 noon.
